Dreamfall walkthrough

Posted in Games by tj on the June 7th, 2006

I played through the adventure game Dreamfall (by FunCom) this weekend. Here is a brief walkthrough and my thoughts on the game.

adventure pc games shop

First of all : This is not a walkthrough where I tell you what to do, say and where to walk in every scene of the game. If you need help to complete any mission or quest in the actual game, you should check out this page. I don’t really feel that this game needs a walkthrough though. The game is so straight forward and extremely easy that a walkthrough would make things more complicated in my opinion. Compared to old heroes and favourites of mine like Monkey Island and Sam & Max, this game was of course alot better graphically and sound-wise, but the game experience itself. Sheesh.

The reason why you do not need a walkthrough for this game, is that the game is a walkthought in itself. To complete this game all you basically need to do is walk through it. I bought this game together with my girlfriend on saturday, and by sunday afternoon we had finished it. We only got stuck with puzzles two times during the whole game. Of course there were certain other challenges when you had to walk without being detected or had to fight someone to get passed them, but these are not what I like to look at as brain teasing adventure game challenges.

The most challenging thing was when I had to come up with a code put together of 4 sounds in the right order. I had 3 sounds to choose from originally, and I guessed that all 3 sounds would have to be included in the code, so that left me with 30 possible options. After 2 minutes of testing, I found the right one. That was actually the hardest part of the whole game. The code is 1213 for those of you who wondered. I’ll leave it up to you to figure out which note is number 1, 2 and 3.

Comparing Dreamfall to for example Myst, or even the above mentioned old favourites like Monkey Island or Sam & Max, is basically like comparing Ludo to Chess. In Dreamfall you never have the freedom of walking where you want and your path is always laid out for you. All doors but the right one are locked, and you can’t talk to any people but the right people. Of course most adventure games limit you to certain scenes at a time so that you don’t have to walk across continents to find the pieces you need for your puzzle, but in Dreamfall you’re limited to operating on a square inch of land. There are few people and items in the game to communicate or interact with, and when you weed out all the easily spotted people that are just there as scenery, you are left with only the really obvious stuff.

In most adventure games a boat will take you across the sea, the book salesman will have the book you need, and a card will be needed to get past a door with a card reader lock. The difference between Dreemfall and other adventure games is that in Dreamfall, the boat you need is the only boat, the book you need is the first thing you get from the book salesman, and the card you need for the door is convenietly pointed out to you in a movie clip 10 seconds before you have to start looking for it.

It says on the box that this game is recommended for 16-year olds and above, but I dubt the game would be challenging enough for even an 8-year old. Needless to say, but a bit satisfactory after all: I’m very disappointed.

And don’t get me started on how they decided to end this game. I don’t care if you think I’m spoiling your fun, I am going to tell you anyways: There is no real ending, just a brief pause in the story to get you ready for Dreamfall 2.

If you are still interested in this game, you can give me a hollar and I will sell you my barely used copy for a sum next to nothing. I might even pay for the shipping and handling.

Bird? Do you mean the flying bot at WATIcorp?

Here is how you get passed the flying bot:

4th floor:Be met by a flying bot. You need to be escorted, guest. You can hide using the hide button on the side of the vending machine or corners whenever the flying security bot arrives. Take a right, left, left and forward to the end.

One way to do this part is: Follow the bot from the elevator. Immediately hide (use hide icon) behind the vending machine. Wait until the bot passes by. Exit the hiding place and continue to go left. Go left at corridor. Go halfway (trigger for bot) and see the bot come out of the double doors at the end of the corridor. Immediately, turn around and go to the first vending machine you hid on. Hide again. Use the mouse to change the point of view to check on the bot that is now at the end of this corridor. As soon as it turns around, exit the hiding place and go to that left corridor. Enter section 2.

The sound pattern you have to figure out is being constantly hummed by the NPC’s in that area; simple to figure out if you pay close attention :-).

I have to agree with you. This game was pretty simple, and that was the “hardest” puzzle. Yet the storyt kept me intrigured. And then, the end? Granted I play the game 30 minutes or so a day so it took me a good week to finish that. And for what? A completely disappointing end? No resolution whatsoever except for like one character. Luckily I only rented this atrocity. I’m sorry you had to waste valued money on this horrid wasted of time.

I disappointed by the end of this game too. I really would like to spoil it for lots of people out there so fewer people buy the game, but … well… it’s written in in medias res. Isn’t that the correct word for it? It begins with the end? :P

I totally agree with what you said TJ,
I wonder whats is the sales figure for this game… cuz in my opinion, i don’t see how it can be enough for Dreamfall 2. Unless there are enough 8 year old’s with big allowances (for the record: i did NOT buy the game)
And … what about that dialog options.. what is their purpose? Cuz i don’t see any altering in the storyline what so ever… and the ending *sighs*… the only good thing in this game is the graphics so if you like to buy a “somewhat” interactive, eye candy, movie.. there it is… Dreamfall

Gods, I agree with you completely, and I regret the money I spent on this rape of the title “the longest journey”.
I hope most of you guys has played it, since this was the sequel to what is in my opinion one of the best games ever, on pair with the monkey island series and right up there on my top three, next to Baldurs Gate 2.

I was hoping for a return to the classic, wondrous adventure games that the Longest Journey gave me, there was not a thing in that game that didn’t appeal to me, everything coordinated and while the graphics wasn’t the best, it was a gaming experience so close to perfect as I’ve ever been.

On the contrary, Dreamfall…well..quite plainly, sucked ass.
it lacked everything in terms of gameplay, control, feel and athmosphere, the puzzles were insultingly easy and the game was so linear they might as well have traded Zoe for a locomotive.

The fact that it’s adapted for a console, and that you can actually clear what was once a great point-and-click game completely with the keyboard…*sigh*

I’ll just go ´burn the damn thing and play “The longest Journey” again..

Also, as a sidenote, April can’t be dead, or did the developers forget about their own game? Bah.

Ill say this for it: Cool story, graphics and sound. But did I buy a game or a movie here? This is quite possibly the worst “game” Ive ever played. Most of the “gameplay” is simply walking from point A to point B in order to further the storyline. I hate to say it though, I might possibly be inclined to check out the sequel just to see how the story unfolds. But as far as a video game goes, it is still pretty awful. Rent, dont buy!

Had to play TLJ again to feel good about life again. Was absorbed by the story till I got to the last third or so of the game, when it seemed to fragment completely. There are things that contradict stuff in the first story (like why is April asking the White of the Kin why she calls her “sister” — didn’t she decide in the first game the original White was her mom? Brian says he journeyed to Arcadia in 1934 after Cortez pulled him out of the snowdrift but the final cutscene has Cortez pulling him out of the snow in 1933 — did he travel back to Stark and slip back in time?) and millions of plot threads that show up in the last few minutes (I assume April marries Kian or at least takes his name, since her older self is Lady Alvane; is Faith saying Zoe saved April in a metaphysical sense here once she fell off the pier or did someone lie to her? Zoe and Faith are also sisters? Test tube kids or kids created like girl in Zork: Nemesis? What is the point of the Reza doppelganger?) Kian should have been the most interesting character, yet you hardly see him, certainly not enough to understand his change of heart (other than that he’s clearly smitten with April). It seems like Zoe’s story could have unfolded just as easily without involving Arcadia at all. I assumed this would be the story of what Crow called “the beautiful warrior princess who won the War of the Balance single-handedly” or how April ended up living in the House Between Worlds or how the worlds were reunited, and maybe that’s where they’re eventually going, but geez! Terrible catch-22 here: if not enough people buy the game, we’ll never get closure on the story, but was this really a game you wanted to sink your money into with no promise of an eventual sequel???

hmm. I just bought it. I still want to play it from start to end, just for the story ^_^ even after I read about all of the reviews.

I Love Longest Journey (the prequel, not this sequel). The story, characters dan environmental are nicely designed (they have some idea that far from reality and combined it with something we oftenly see everyday). I’ve play it 3 times..

At least my heart will be prepared if the sequel not as good as my expextation, by reading your review.

I liked TLJ very much and replayed it to remember the story before playing Dreamfall (which I actually bought recently!). different from most of the writings posted above I want to say this:
I like Dreamfall too. the story is interesting and playing more than 1 character is nice for a change. A little fighting every now and then is nice too. the puzzles can be solved without having nervous breakdowns all the time (I’ve always hated the illogical puzzles in the old Sierra-games where you had to climb endless narrow paths/ladders etc without fallind down in order to survive like in Space Quest/Kings Quest/LSL series).
Being 53 I don’t want to spend so much time in front of the screen anymore and don’t like being frustrated all the time anymore. that’s why I like TLJ 1+2

    aaaaaaaaaaaaaaarg!

I can’t believe they did such an awful game as a sequel to one of the best games (storywise) ever. Was there a point to it? I feel it’s more a prequel to Dreamfall 2 than a game in itself. If you liked TLJ, DON’T buy Dreamfall. If you really, really wanna play it, borrow it. Even a rental would be too expensive for the gaming experience you’ll get out of Dreamfall.

I know I cannot continue unless I do. Can anyone help me. I’ve been to walk throughs and none of them say anything about this other than you don’t have the right key. ????? Any help will be appreciated. Thank you

Well obviously you have not done everything, because if you did everything then you wouldn’t be stuck, would you? :)

For instance: Did you take the egg off the machine after you started it? You have to pick up the egg again after the wheel has started…

Here is the rest of the stuff on your waterwheel todo-list:
Waterwheel: Go forward to the end of the ledge and see a giant waterwheel. Climb down the steps and look at the waterwheel. There’s a platform up there. Climb the steps close to the waterwheel. Go forward and see a broken ladder.

See a machine on the right platform. Turn the wheel and see sparks come out from top. Saved game here. Open inventory and place the glowing egg on top of the machine. Now, turn the wheel again and hear musical sound. Remember this sound. See that the powered machine opens up the water flow. The water wheel turns. Stand to left side of the machine and look up at the egg. Take the glowing egg off the machine.

Go down the steps and use the water wheel. See Zoë hold on to one of the waterwheel board to reach the top platform. Go forward and jump across the broken walkway. Go forward and climb the ladder.

Glyphs on the wall: At the top of the cliff by the waterwheel, go forward to the very end of the cave.

See 3 glowing glyphs on the wall. Press each one to hear the sound it makes.

Remember the tone heard when the waterwheel was activated. Reproduce that sound by pressing the glyphs in correct order.

Press left, middle, left and then right glyphs. A ring of fire opens up a door on the wall.

Did anyone get what happened to the White dragon? What was that scene for ,anyway? It just shows her screaming and you never find out why? Was the publishers goal to confuse as much as possible, or am I just too stupid to get the story?

  29. Marty said,

    on March 18th, 2007 at kl. 23.28

I must say I really liked the first 5 chapters of the game, but after it was way too easy. There was also alot of missing pieces like what happened to the white dragon? I just bought the game and I don’t think it was a total loss of money, cause I really loved the story.(Not the end!)

But I have a question: In chapter 5 when you play as April in the underground city, how do figure out have too turn the wheel on the different statues?(I used a walkthrough) And the troll scared the crap out of me.

And one more thing, is ‘the longest journey’ about the same people and the same consept. I hear alot of people talking about it and maybe I should try that too if it isn’t just talking like in dreamfall.

Because, the game hasnt ended, April has got to be alive she got stabbed and fell in the water how do we know she didnt just swim to the shore? or how about Kian? how do we know that he will be killed or that he escaped or something? And this wrecks it…. you know there will be a sequal, WHEN IN THE WORLD DO THE BAD GUYS WIN??? ……….NEVER!!!! April will live she might help free kian and april will wake up from the koma or she will be stuck in arcadia? And what about the blue dragon and the crow and the guy with the name i cant remember that were left at that library? Do you want me to go on there is a million things that need explaining and a million mysteries……theres no way in the world that , that game ends there! But this is me……..what do you think? :D (got a bit carried away there)

This game is hurting my head also my me upset i got too attached to the game a bit :)

    Hi to all Dreamfall players,

I want to give my thinking of this game.
I ended this game one month ago.
First of all I must say that I don’t like the end at all. The end is too confusing and very disappointing. I played this game with lots of feelings and I disapprove the end.
This game has many new features and every new game is suposed to be like Dreamfall is. I liked the new controls and the great graphics of the game.
I didn’t know about this forum and I found it today. I like the idea that all of you had the same confusion about the end, at the end I am not the only one with this “game” falure.
I like the words of KCs. He wrote it very interesting and it really has big logic. I hope that the game developers really mean to put everything in the next continuance of this game. BUT… If we must wait for the next continuance for about 5 years (we did wait so long for the second continuace), then who will remember all this stuff so long.
I am used to end every game with joy in my heart, but this game really turned me up side down. I’d love to see the next continuance really very soon and with lots of explains about this continuance.
Big HI to all of you especially to KC and his great ideas. I hope his ideas will come true.

thanks for that, the only problem is when you hide using the hide icon you cannot change the point of view - i.e. the view doesn’t change when Zoe moves so we can’t see if she gets half or 2/4 or anyway down the corridor. its only when a bot attacks you that you can change the perspective (view)

    Dude… It is tooooo easy.

Go down the ladder again and push a container to position it under a window. You should manage from there.

… and you COULD also check out the link to the walkthrough at the top of this page. It has very detailed instructions:

Open the shed door and get the axe.

Sneak to exit through the gate.

    Victory Hotel:

Enter Victory Hotel: Climb down the metal ladder and go right of the ladder. Zoë will see a light through the boarded up window.

See a metal bar at bottom of the trash container. Use metal bar.

Go to the other end of the container and get close to the container. Click on the container to push it 4 times to get it under the lit window.

Climb up the container and use the axe on the boards on the window. The axe dropped inside.

    Climb in through the window.
