football coach giving instructions

I was thinking about the desire for multiskilled players. This is exceedingly difficult to pull off now, as the current system of training is both unrealistic and lacks depth in this department. I came up with what may be a complex, but exciting solution.

Instead of generic Asst. Coaches and GK Coaches, have actual former players fill in the slots of assistant coaches, in two specific fields: Offensive Coach (For Forwards and Midfielders) and Defensive Coach (for Defenders and Goalkeepers).

The New Asst. Coaches will train ONLY skills directly relating to their players (i.e. the defensive coach can’t train Scoring, offensive coach can’t train Keeper). In addition, the head coach may train any field.

Assistant coaches also may improve their trainer abilities while serving as an assistant (to a certain point and certain time period…we don’t need divine trainers, and a player with wretched experience shouldn’t become the next Arsene Wenger), and this is more realistic as few make the jump directly from player to head coach, passing by the assistant level.

This will have multiple benefits. Firstly, budgets will be reduced as you are now paying a staff of two assistants instead of 10 (My head coach is paid $300 a week, and my assistants $1500 each…???). Secondly, and most obviously, multiskilled players are now a possibility for even the newest teams. Thirdly, you now have a system for developing coaches and opening up a new transfer market/revenue stream by developing and promoting/selling assistant coaches.

Finally, this is more of a cosmetic suggestion: Would it be better to refer to trainer ratings with different names than the usual “Passable-solid-excellent”? Just my opinon, I think adjectives better related to mental abilities might do the trick, i.e., “Plain-Bright-Genius”.
