Team aggressiveness
I propose that the team captain’s aggressiveness would affect the aggressiveness of the team, having (minor!) effects on the match engine. This change would increase strategic opportunities and would make both the selection of the captain and the aggressivity ratings have more of an effect.
Please note that all of the effects listed below are intended to be minor, with about the same level of importance that of a team clown. The effects should be large enough to make a difference but small enough that players who ignore them would not be heavily disadvantaged.
If the team captain is aggressive, then his side would play more aggressively as a team. Effects of aggressive play would be:
- Slight improvement in possession (perhaps as an adjustment of the midfield rating)
- Teamwide increase in yellow and red cards
- Increased risk of injury for both sides
- Passive players are uncomfortable with the pace of play and receive a slight penalty
- Conversely, aggressive players are in their element and perform slightly better
A calm or tranquil captain leads his team to play less aggressively, which has precisely the opposite effects. (Less possession, fewer bookings, fewer injuries to both sides, and per-player bonuses/penalties for being passive.)
Extreme aggressiveness ratings (firey, tranquil) of course would have more of an effect than moderate ratings (tempermental, calm). The effects listed above would apply less when a moderately aggressive/calm captain is fielded. The bonus/penalty for individual players would also be less when those players have moderate aggressivity ratings.
Perhaps the most obvious objection to this proposal is that another team can increase your team’s risk of injury by fielding an aggressive captain. I think this is okay, as the effect would be slight, and this effect mirrors real life.
The advantage, I believe, is that it makes the choice of a team captain more interesting (is a slight increase in possession worth a greater risk of bookings and injuries?), and gives the dedicated player a reasonable bonus for assembling and fielding a compatible team.
