De-emphasize midfield
It seems to me that at the moment, the emphasis placed on the midfield strength is too great. I regularly come up against teams that I am stronger than in every area of the park with the exception of Midfield, and regularly, I lose. This is entirely unrealistic, it is the equivalent of suggesting that if you put Scholes, Gerrard and Lampard in the Watford midfield that they would finish above Spurs or Arsenal. Simply because the midfield is stronger. Why not give each of the areas of the park equal weighting, that way you can be “successful” with a side that is offensively strong, defensively strong, strong in midfield, or a mixture of these. Formation Routines: a new approach
Actually in HT, you have the default 4-4-2 routine that is always excellent, no matter how much you (don’t) use it. Even if you spend 1 or 2 seasons playing in 4-5-1 or 3-5-2, if you change the formation for a couple of games, the routine will drop at least one level.
